BioHere I Am, Sharon DuBois’ second album as a solo artist, presents us with a funky, new, fresh sound. Her band lays down a deep and solid groove upon which Sharon’s silky and innovative voice is supported and she freely expresses herself, tantalizing all or your senses.  All songs are original “S” as her friends like to call her.  She writes straight from the heart, giving the listener an intimate view into her innermost truth.  With courage, she holds nothing back, presenting you with the beauty of a divinely channeled love experience.

Sharon DuBois has been singing since babyhood under the guiding tutelage of her 10 older siblings and musical parents and surrounded by pianos, guitars and a harp.  Her first solo performance was at the age of 12.

She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology/American Indian Studies from San Diego State University and an Associates degree in Music/Voice Concentration from Monroe Community College. Sharon studied voice at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

Ms. DuBois has performed with a multitude of bands and artists from Wynton Marsalis to Daniel Jackson (Ray Charles) and Marshall Hawkins (Miles Davis) to the La Jolla Symphony Orchestra Choir.  She sang with Charles McPherson Jr.’s Cold Sweat Band at Idyllwild’s Jazz in the Pines festival, 2010.  But, Sharon says her most thrilling and memorable performance happened as singer of the MCC Big Band at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York.

Sharon has over 500 jazz standards in her songbook and is willing to work with your band or her own at weddings, corporate affairs, festivals and night clubs.

Sharon DuBois Supports New Disc with Local TV Debut August 30

San Diego vocalist Sharon DuBois has released her second album, Here I Am, and will debut some songs on local TV station KUSI, at 9:00 am, Tuesday, August 30.

DeBois studied voice at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and claims influences from Joan Armatrading to Betty Carter. Joni Mitchell and Bruce Cockburn inspire her lyrically, while Bill Evans and Charles Mingus are her favorite composers.

Ms. DuBois is a ubiquitous presence on the San Diego jazz scene. If you’ve been to a local jazz performance, or follow any SD jazz musicians on FB, you’ve seen her.

She has been involved with some of the area’s finest musicians, performing or recording with tenor saxophonist Daniel Jackson, alto legend Charles McPherson, and trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos.

Her highlight musical memory, though, stems from a gig she did with the MCC Big Band at the world-famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York.

Here I Am is an all-originals program that showcases the singer’s smoky alto in a mostly funk-jazz setting.

What caught my ear were the moments (through the magic of multi-tracking), where she harmonizes with herself. Something about that technique maximizes the sultry effect.

Drummer John Staten produced the disc, and the core group includes Glen McKinney on guitar, Stephen McKinney on bass, and local phenomenonJoshua White on piano.

Guest appearances by Castellanos and Jackson greatly enhance the tracks on which they appear.

In its strongest moments, Here I Am floats along with a jazz-funk groove reminiscent of the 70s Crusaders, or, on some tracks, the sophisticated feel of 80s era Steely Dan. It takes a tight band to pull that off.

One piece, “I Miss You”, made me think of the Joni Mitchell classic, “A Case Of You.”

Exciting New Album – Sharon DuBois

Posted June 28th, 2011 by Ric Overton | No Comments »

I  was so proud to get an update from my friend in San Diego who has introduced a new album.   Last year Sharon DuBois did a Monday night performance in our store, PianoSD on Live at PianoSD you can see here. Coming Back to Me

As I listened to the tracks of her new project I was completely surprised by what I heard.  She did a great job on each song.  The project “Here I Am” is the second of her projects and this is a very impressive improvement both in delivery but in the musicality of each cut.

The project starts with “All Wrapped Up In You” which is a very spirited rendition with great arrangement.

The second song “You Keep Coming Back To Me” was the song she performed on Live at PianoSD.  I was even more impressed by her recording than I was the first night I heard it.  The ease of her performance is what impresses me the most.  The phrasing she delivers is as if she is sitting in the room telling you a story.

“Confess” is one of the coolest on the project.  Although, I have to confess that Sharon has bought some of my favorite musicians together on this cut.  Daniel Jackson is one of my very favorite people and musicians in San Diego and beyond.  He is the coolest of the cool and I always enjoyed Daniel both as a friend and as a musician.  Gilbert Castellanos is one of the finest musicians in Southern California and always delivers a great performance.  His reputation as a musician is only overshadowed by his reputation as a gentleman.  I am not as  familiar with Stephen McKinney or John Staten except by their music and exemplary artistry on this project however, Joshua White is one of the very finest, all around jazz pianists I know (and I know a lot of pianist).  Joshua’s ability to bring you into a song is second to none and has some of the most impressive phrased voices in the business.

With all of this talent combined it would be hard to have turned out a bad cut.  The sexiest song on the album is the album title “Here I Am”.  Although Sharon undoubtedly did not intend this trac to be considered the “sexiest”, her voice is almost haunting as she delivers her message in this song.  I was captivated from the first bar and drawn into a “sit down and listen” position. Very impressive.

It is so nice to see and hear talents like Sharon’s and to know each of these talents have the ability to put themselves into a situation that people like me will be able to say “I knew them when”.  Being from Nashville, Tn., I have heard some of the finest talent in the country and I can tell you without a second thought that Sharon is able to “hold her own” with any of them.

Congratulations on a job well done! You can find her information, album and sample cuts at http://SharonDuBois.com . Take the time to go to her site, listen and pre-order
